Colorectal Cancer Awareness CSR Program
Yakult has partnered with Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara and Sin Chew Daily to organize a Colorectal Cancer Awareness Program, which took place on March 25, 2023, at the Sin Chew Daily Office Event Hall. The program, entitled “Diagnosed Too Late, Too Difficult to Treat? Understanding Colorectal Cancer: It’s Never Too Late for Prevention” aimed to raise public awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer which is also in line with one of Yakult’s philosophy, prevention is better than cure. More than 100 participants attended the program. Participants received complementary Yakult probiotic drinks and a set of iFOBT test kit for colorectal cancer self-screening.
This program is one of the initiatives from Yakult’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which aims to bring health and happiness to the public. This event hopes to increase Malaysians’ awareness on the risk of colorectal cancer and how healthy lifestyle and eating habits can reduce the risk of this cancer, as evidenced by a Japanese colon cancer research expert, Dr. Hideki Ishikawa1.
The study was conducted by Dr. Hideki Ishikawa from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Japan to evaluate the effectiveness of dietary fiber or L. casei Shirota strain in reducing occurrence of colorectal tumors amongst 398 high-risk patients aged between 40-65 years. The patients were divided into groups with or without intake of L. casei Shirota strain powder. The occurrence of polyps was investigated after 2 and 4 years.
After 4 years, the group administered with L. casei Shirota strain powder showed a significant decrease by 35% in the formation of colorectal tumors that are more likely to turn cancerous as compared with the groups that did not. The study suggested that L. casei Shirota strain may reduce the risk of the development of colorectal tumors.
